My Apologies to MyDD Obama supporters

Those of you familiar with my posts know that I have not been a Stuart Smalley type in my discussions with Obama supporters.  I will confess to being, as Michael Barone describes, one of those Jacksonian Democrats who is not interested in understanding his opponents as much as he is interested in fighting and defeating them.  In the course of displaying my natural temperment, I often have been insulting, dismissive, and hostile to many of you.

Last night I ventured over to TPM and Huffington (I at least had the good sense not to go to Kos) to read the reactions there.  I was reminded of why I am so hostile to Obama supporters.  However, in making a mental comparison of them to the Obama supporters at MyDD, I realized that many, if not most, of you on this site are quite different in your approaches and I was unfair and wrongheaded to paint so many of you with the same angry and bigoted brush.  I was also very impressed at the sympathetic tone most of you offered last night and how much that tone differed from what I was reading on those other sites.  Unfortunately, I am noticing that Clinton's likely defacto demise is bringing a few more of those unsavory supporters around here today.

So, my apologies and congratulations on your candidate's success and how well most of you have represented him.

Re: My Apologies to MyDD Obama supporters (2.00 / 7)

I think the KEY question is, how many of us want to send John McCain into an earlier retirement, and how many want to take out their anger by letting another Republican appoint MORE USSC justices?

Stupid things were said on Both Sides, I tried to stay civil.

But, NOW, I have to say, anyone that tells me, they are a Democrat and are voting for John McCain is persona non gratis to me.

If Obama decides to put Hillary on the ticket, then more power to him?

I hope Bill comes out and campaigns, and I am pretty sure Obama will ask him?

My god, I was depressed for DAYS after 2000 and 2004.

Not again, and don't tell me ANYTHING about John McCain.

If you want to support him, I think it might be time for you to go someplace else, because MyDD is a Democratic Website.

Re: My Apologies to MyDD Obama supporters (2.00 / 4)

Or, at least, ask them WHY?

If it is just because they are angry, ask them to take some time, and think why they became a democrat in the first place?

Hell, I was so made when Howard Dean lost, I just HATED Kerry...

But, I got over it.

Hopefully, my fellow Democrats and Clinton supporters (at least, most of them) will as well.

It is a democracy and people can vote as they want.  HRing them certainly won't win them over or change their mind against McCain.

That's fine.  I'm personally tired of reading them - especially that "switching sides" character whose only purpose is to disrupt conversation.  I'd just as soon not enable them.

Re: My Apologies to MyDD Obama supporters (none / 0)

It's hard to separate the sincere but misguided from the trolls and mobys.  Since McCain and Obama are polar opposites on the important issues, it's pretty safe to say that any Democrat that gives a damn will be sticking with the Party in November.  It's understandable that for some it will take a cooling off period before getting to that point, though.

Agreed! (none / 0)

As soon as the media attention is on McCain and Democrats start hearing more about Alito clones on the SC and 100 years of war in Iraq, we'll come together.

Obama at least offering Hillary the VP slot would go a long way.

Re: Agreed! (none / 0)

It would be better if they immediately crafted the Clinton-Obama healthcare bill.  They could get a vote on it, something they're committed to passing with one as President and the other as VP or a strong advocate in the Senate.  Get a vote on it.  Mark those in the GOP who vote against it.  Use it as a talking point in Congressional races.

It would, at best, get vetoed.  But it would be a remarkable starting point for 2009 and on from then.

No way. No how. No McCain.

Re: Agreed! (none / 0)

That's a great idea.  As much as I hate playing politics with the legislative process, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have the ability to schedule a bunch of very inconvenient votes for the GOP over the next six months.

Yes, a lot of the Obama supporters around here are very good, considerate, thoughtful people. We should judge people on an individual basis, not by which candidate they support.

It never occurred to me to use a different name on different sites.  I mean, I turned 40 this year.  When I got a new phone number I had to carry it around on a card for 2 weeks.

I realized a while ago that the many of the Clinton supporters here are much more sane than those on many other blogs.  There's actually a petition out there for Democrats who are promising not to vote for Obama.  Shameless.

by Renie on Wed May 07, 2008 at 09:08:44 PM EST

Re: My Apologies to MyDD Obama supporters (none / 0)

A petition huh.  Another one.  To be sent where?  Have the thought that through?  Oh I know - they'll send it to "the superdelegates".  A few stray copies well end up in the trash bins of Mssrs. Kennedy, Brazile, and Richardson.

Some enterprising souls will hit on the idea that they should also send it to "the media".  After about 600 signatures it will die down.  Then it's time for... another petition.

Appreciated. I got so sick of the battle that I ducked out for the last month.  I am glad that we are coming together and winding down the hostility.

Either of our candidates will beat McCain...this is why I think HRC was fighting so hard.  No matter who gets the nomination is likely to be President.

A bit concerned Barack might be too conciliatory to do some of these and other tough jobs, so we'll have to hold his feet to the fire if he's the prez.

Nice diary (2.00 / 1)

DKos is depressing (and I am an Obama leaner) in its fury.  Though there are those on both sides who are here to disrupt.  We can get rid of a few (ilikebillnot for example).  I honestly don't care who a person supports now, I just want as many votes for a democrat (well any democrat but those who are like Leiberman) November.

Looking forward to bashing Johnny Mac's policies with you as there is plenty of material there.

Very well said, lombard. (none / 0)

And the good historical reference to Jacksonian Democrats opens further windows of understanding.  I really can only speak for myself, but I suspect you'll find the tenor of many Obama supporters to be more Jeffersonian--I certainly consider myself a Jeffersonian Democrat.

But at the end of the day, we're all one party.  Some times the one Will Rogers referred to when he said, "I belong to no organized political party, I'm a Democrat," but still...one party.

You're a credit to the party and the progressive movement.  Campaigns are tough and we all say things that in hindsight we wish we could take back.  From where I stand, if you are ready to support the Dem nominee even if its not Hillary, however, then whatever you said is water under the bridge.
